There will be a residence within every mile of the railroad and Jonesboro will become a suburb of Atlanta. predicted the
Clayton County Annual, less than 30 years after the Civil War. Today the county boasts a population of over 200,000 and itis projected to keep climbing.
The Central Railroad through Jonesboro has been replaced by Hartsfield - Jackson International Airport as the main transporation facility. The airport's terminal is the world's largest and, in terms of aircraft operation, Hartsfield - Jackson is the world's busiest operation. With an established transportation infrastructure, northern Clayton County has become a thriving manufacturing, commercial and distribution center. More than 12,000 of the 35,000 people that work in and around the airport live in Clayton County.
One of the county's key missions is to ensure the airports economy remains healthy and growing by marketing the infrastructure of services that help move goods and people into and out of Hartsfield. More than two dozen business parks in the county provide millions of square feet of space for manufacturing and distribution users. The Atlanta Tradeport and the many freight forwarders supply duty - free warehousing of imported goods until they are released into the U.S. marketplace.
A secondary center of commerce has emerged around Southlake Mall, which includes the Summit at Southlake and Corporate Center at Southlake. Construction continues at a steady rate and a number of new residential developments have bee built, which have increased the range and quality of housing in Clayton.
The county's school system is competitive with others in the nation - 10 of Clayton County's schools have been named Georgia Schools of Excellence and several have been named National Schools of Excellence (Blue Ribbon Schools). There are also several Private Schools and one college in the county.
Housing prices vary from the affordable $100s to million - dollar homes in and around Like Spivey. The county also boasts a famous fictional home: Scarlet O'Hara's plantation, Tara, from author Margaret Mitchell's Gone With the Wind.
