The Cherokee Indians called this region where the Chattahoochee River flows through the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains the Land of Enchantment. The Cherokee and Creek Indians called the village where the river and Peachtree Creek met, Standing Peachtree. It was destined to have two other names before it became Atlanta.

These days the county is divided into two sections, North and South Fulton. North Fulton offers a casual lifestyle with both quality education and easy access to the sprawling city of Atlanta. A blend of historic older cities like Roswell and Alpharetta and new urban areas like Sandy Springs, Fulton has everything from affordable suburban neighborhoods to multimillion dollar mansions.

Many high-tech, white-collar and international businesses are drawn to the bustling GA 400 corridor where planned communities like John's Creek, Windward and Oxford Green abound. Relocations and expansions by Equifax, Kaiser Permanente, AT &T, State Farm and UPS have added thousands of jobs to the area. North Point Mall, off GA 400 at Haynes Bridge Road, opened in 1993 with 1.1 million square feet of retail space, making it one of Georgia's largest malls.

The extension of GA400 and a new MARTA rail line, opened in Sandy Springs, has brought even more growth to north Fulton.

South Fulton is home to the City of Atlanta, a renowned financial, administrative and distributive center as well as the cultural, retail, entertainment, communications and transportation hub for the close to five million people who call the metro area home. The cultural capitol of the South, Atlanta's slogan, The World's Next Great International City, is proving true. About 35 nations operate consulates and trade offices here. Selection of Georgia's capital city as the site of the 1996 Olympic Games cemented Atlanta's global reputation.

The city consistently ranks as one of the top five U.S. convention sites. There's great momentum in the central business sector, with restaurants and the revitalized Underground Atlanta, a popular downtown shopping and entertainment complex, drawing record numbers of tourists and residents. The Five Points area is generating great interest as major non-profit organizations and Georgia State University fill up existing space. Loft-style living is popular in this area and around Marietta Street. Castleberry Hill has become the city's main arts neighborhood - Atlanta's answer to New York City's meatpacking district.

But Midtown is really the heart of Atlanta's cultural life, with the Robert W. Woodruff Arts Center housing the world-class Atlanta Symphony, the Alliance Theatre and the High Museum of Art. Upscale Buckhead enjoys booming retail stores, restaurants and nighttime entertainment, while other South Fulton neighborhoods offer lower land prices and quick access to the city.

From stately Georgian mansions to modest bungalows, Atlanta's architecture is as varied as the cost of housing. Clean-lined functional skyscrapers complement the surrounding tree-lined neighborhoods.

Older inner-city neighborhoods such as Midtown, the trendy Virginia-Highlands and Inman Park have been revitalized by a growing number of young Atlantans who prefer urban living. Other communities include Garden Hills, Edgewood and Cabbagetown; and the Victorian environs of Grant Park.

Nearby are major universities, shopping centers, the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historical Site and the Carter Presidential Center. Major league sports are also represented. The Georgia Dome was the site of the 2000 Super Bowl, and is home to the Atlanta Falcons football team; Braves baseball is played at Turner Field and the Hawks and Thrashers share a home at Philips Arena.

The City of Atlanta has its own public school system apart from Fulton County. Several outstanding private schools are also located within the city limits. South Fulton covers 125,000 acres, stretching from the southwestern city limits of Atlanta to the beautifully wooded hills and dales 70 miles southward - all within a stone's throw from one of the world's busiest and finest airports, Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International.
