DeKalb County acquired its present shape in 1853, when Fulton County was carved from its westernmost portion. With one ofthe largest populations of any Georgia county today, DeKalb offers a fine balance of jobs and housing for its nearly 700,000 residents. This central county has remained popular with industries and employees because of its wide mix of transportation options, including MARTA, four major interstates, numerous truck terminals, good rail sites and the DeKalb PeachtreeAirport - the second busiest air facility in Georgia and home to many of the region's corporate aircraft. For frequent flyers,Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport is just six miles beyond the county line.

Besides being a major transportation hub, DeKalb has positioned itself at the forefront of biomedical technology. Along the one-mile streth of reoad known as the Clifton Corridot, reside some of the Southeast's greatest biomedical organizations, including the Centers for Disease Control (the only federal agency outside Washington, D.C.), the Yerkes Primate Center, Emory University's Rollins Research Center and the American Cancer Society's National Headquarters.

DeKalb's strong hospitality industry attracted many visitors during the 1996 Olympics, with Stone Mountain hosting several Olympic events. DeKalb's international flavor is also visible in its demographic profile, boasting the highest concentration of Hispanics and Asians in Georgia. The county is also one of the largest refugee resettlement locations in the country.

The county's public schools system also has the largest international student center for helping students and families adjust to life in the United States. DeKalb's outstanding Special Education Program attracts students from other counties, and over 82 percent of DeKalb high school graduates go on to college or post-secondary school.

DeKalb's historic heritage is evident in its county seat, Decatur, where commerce revolves around the old Courthouse Square. Though rural until the 1950's, the DeKalb of tday features residential neighborhoods, office and industrial parks, hotels, shopping centers, universities and health centers. History continues to thrive in the work left behind by Frederick Law Olmsted, the internationally acclaimed father of landscape architecture and designer of DeKalb's Tudor-style neighborhood, Druid Hills.

Homebuyers may also choose from upscale Dunwoody, the artistic charm of Decatur, the Victorian homes of Stone Mountain, Emory's well-groomed university community or growing southeastern DeKalb, where land is open and prices are modest.
